7-inch Kindle Fire HD clocked at 1.2GHz

Written by Fuad Abazovic

Fire HD 8.9 at 1.5GHz

Amazon confirmed that it is using Texas Instruments’ OMAP 4470 in the Kindle Fire HD. The OMAP 4470 is supposed to work at 1.5GHz, all the way up to 1.8GHz, and it turns out that in case of Kindle Fire HD it works at OMAP 4460 clock speeds.

Amazon Germany has revealed that the processor in question is a “1.2GHz dual core processor with Imagination PowerVR graphics.” In original quote it sounds like this: “Schnelle und flüssige Performance dank leistungsstarkem 1,2 GHz Dual-Core-Prozessor mit Imagination PowerVR-Grafikkern“.

Once we checked Amazon.com we found out that the bigger Kindle Fire HD 8.9 actually sports a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an OMAP 4 4470 class part to be precise.

This tidbit created a controversy, as many assumed tha HD Fire tablets use the exact same chip, and despite being based on the same technology, the clock will end up different.

Currently the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is only available for preorders in the USA while most European countries who have Amazon dot-their –country-domain. including UK, DE, FR, ES, AT should be able to order one 7 inch HD even today.

It will be interesting to give this device a test ride, but some of the application we like to test might not be available at the Amazon app store as Kindle Fire in any variation uses some kind of Android now based on 4.0, but doesn’t come with native Play Store support, which is kind of a big thing if you ask us.
